Marymount University is offering an exciting opportunity for rising 11th and 12th-grade high school students in the summer to take a two-week intensive course to earn 3 college credits.

Requirements

You must be a rising Junior or Senior with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and a recommendation from your school to participate in the course.

 

Our Summer Institutes

 

Frontiers in STEM (3credits) Biology 106

This course provides a general science overview for non-science majors and develops an understanding

of scientific processes and reasoning, including knowledge of several developments in the STEM fields. This course also focuses on appreciating the interrelationships among the sciences and their relationships to other disciplines. Emphasis is on solving problems and developing logical hypotheses.

We would make field trips to the National Zoo, Natural History Museum, and Air and Space Museum.

 

Introduction to Criminal Justice (3 credits)

Description: This course will provide students with an overview of the criminal justice system and its three parts: police, courts, and corrections. Students will learn what happens when an individual becomes involved in the system, from initial arrest to sentencing. The roles of each actor in the system will also be explored. Additionally, students will learn about criminological theories applicable to the criminal justice system, forms of harsh punishment, and reentry into the community after incarceration.

 

Maker-neering - Engineering with Maker Tools (3 credits)

This course is a hands-on, project-based introduction to modern digital fabrication tools engineers use for rapid prototyping. Students will learn the basics of computer-aided design (CAD), manufacture original 3D designs using three desktop 3D printing technologies (FDM, resin and bio printing), explore the fundamentals of electronic circuits, build animatronics with Arduino microcontrollers and create immersive virtual reality experiences for the Oculus Quest 2. No prior experience with any of these technologies is needed.

 

Introduction to Media Communication (3 credits)

Our summer program is designed to engage students with multiple facets of communication studies. Students will engage in media literacy, blogging, curating their social media presence, public speaking, and debate. Based on the brevity of the program, students will learn a breadth of communication techniques that will introduce them to the multiple areas of communication studies and encourage them to continue their exploration into the depth of the topics after the program has been completed. The two-week program will focus on an introduction to media in the first week and the fundamentals of public speaking in the second.

*Students are responsible to arrange and pay for transportation to Marymount University and returning home. Marymount will provide transportation while on campus and attending an institute.

 

CDC Information and Recommendations

COVID-19 is present globally, and a pandemic has been declared by the World Health Organization (WHO). COVID-19 is a respiratory disease similar to influenza. Individuals should take every day preventative measures and take antiviral medication if prescribed.
If you are ill, you are advised to stay home, avoid travel, and wear a mask when outside the home. Avoid taking ibuprofen products if you have COVID-19 symptoms, which can make the virus worse. It is best to take acetaminophen as directed.

MARYMOUNT PLAN:

Marymount is closely monitoring the course of COVID-19. Recommendations from the CDC, World Health Organization, and Virginia Department of Health are being implemented as received. We are also participating in weekly discussions with the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area in order to jointly monitor coronavirus developments on campuses throughout the region.

Marymount implemented a vaccination clinic on campus in the spring and will continue to provide vaccination opportunities for students, staff, and faculty.
